On my way home last night, thick fog suddenly filled the atmosphere, and I could barely see what was ahead of me. I had left home only an hour earlier, and it was as clear as day, so I was surprised by the sudden change in the weather. I was being extra careful, and as I slowly made my way home, I had another conversation with the Holy Spirit.
One question I often ask God is why doesn’t He always give us the full picture ahead of our journeys in life. I know my life will be so much easier if I know the exact route to take or order to follow. I’d definitely make fewer mistakes, waste less time and for sure follow exactly what God has planned for me.
The Holy Spirit decided to use the circumstance I found myself in yesterday to answer my question. He said to me, I want you to learn three things today. “You see how you and all the other drivers have slowed down because of the fog, that’s how I want you to live.” You don’t always have to be in haste to do the next thing or get to the next level. Savor the now, take a moment to slow down because that is how you can hear from God about the next step to take concerning His plan for your life. Slow down and hear from God every step of the way.
Secondly, you don’t always need to see the full picture or have the complete plan. I could only see a few feet ahead as I drove, and that was all I needed to make it to my destination; I didn’t need to see the end of my journey. God doesn’t reveal the steps that we need to take all at once. He may only show us one step at a time, and that’s ok. As we go through the step He has shown us, He will lead us into the next one that we have to take.
The Holy Spirit then said, “It takes a lot of faith to only know one step and fly with it.” Faith is an important foundation in our relationship with God, and it has to be built. We don’t just get up one day with mountain moving faith. In order to have faith that is bold enough to wholly trust God’s plan that we don’t know in totality, we must nurture and grow the little faith that we have now. If we want to continue walking with God we must have faith that doesn’t need to see the endgame before taking a step.
As Jeremiah reminds us in chapter 29 verse 11 of his book, God says "For I know the plans and thoughts that I have for you,’ says the Lord, ‘plans for peace and well-being and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope" (AMP). Let's slow down, have faith, and continue taking one step at a time, as God leads us into the future that He has for us.
Love,
Alice
