The Down Payment

I love how the Christian Standard Bible (CSB) puts 2 Corinthians 5:5. It says “Now the one who has prepared us for this very purpose is God, who gave us the Spirit as a down payment.”

God has indeed set us up for success, and we so often miss this. 

Before we buy a house, a car, an electronic device or anything that we don’t have the full payment for at the time we want to buy whatever it is, we make a down payment - securing the item for us. This down payment ensures that, if another person should come in for the same item, it won’t be given to them. It'd be saved for us.

Depending on the type of contract we have with the seller, we may be able to keep the item while we make payments, until we have paid for it in full, or, the item will be held for us until we have made full payment, and then it becomes our property.

In an even better way, God has given us the Spirit as a down payment while we’re here on earth; An assurance that we don’t have to fulfill our purpose by ourselves. His Spirit will be with us every step of the way guiding and directing our paths. God has paid the down payment for everything that’s perfect and good for us. 

God has secured our purpose, and the interesting thing is that we don’t even need to add anything to this payment, because He again in all His generosity, gave up His son to pay the ultimate price so that we may be saved. We are debt free by virtue of being children of God. 

We must walk the earth with this knowledge and fulfill our every purpose for which we are called to. 

Every day, remember that God hasn’t left you to do life by yourself. He has blessed you with His spirit, and paid the highest price for you. As you walk in the purpose for which you’ve been called, victory is yours, and His name will be glorified!
