Many, if not all of us, while growing up have our plans, goals and dreams. We think about who we want to become, and where we should be by the time we are a certain age. So, naturally, when we don't see these expectations, we become disappointed.
With social media now, it’s even easier to begin to compare ourselves to our friends and so called ‘mates’ and if we will be a tad bit honest, we start to become envious and jealous.
We examine our lives and wonder why things are not going as we had planned. Why does this person have their own home at 30 or why does she have her own successful business at 25? Why am I still in school at 35? Or why do I have nothing to show for my many years of working at 41?
If we are not careful sadness takes over our lives, and we may even fall into depression. We no longer find joy in anything we do, after all God has forgotten about us. We believe the lie from the enemy that He has given all the ‘good’ things to others and has left us stuck in the same spot with nothing to boast about.
How ungrateful we can get as children of God! It may be true that you are 40 and still don’t have a career or maybe you have put in your best efforts and still cannot find the financial freedom you hoped to have achieved by 30. But have you considered all of the ‘little’ things you do have? Have you sat down to think about where you could have ended up? - with no job, or home or money to your name?
We all want the beautiful things in life and God wants that for us as well. He created us and made us heirs to His throne, and He doesn’t want us to experience the blessings and good things only when we are in heaven. He wants us to live heaven right here on earth.
When we feel like we are not where we are supposed to be, we must remember that God knows every aspect of our lives, and He knows exactly what we are going through right now (Psalms 139: 1 - 6). But guess what? You’re exactly where you’re supposed to be, if you are following God's lead and making decisions based on His will!
Where you are now is beautiful too. Let’s stop being obsessed with where we want to be so much so that we refuse to see the good in the now. It may not be the season of abundance, but it may be your season of growth, or of resilience or of difficulty or of love or of kindness.
My twelve year old patient, who has a neurodevelopmental disorder, and a physical disability told me something while wearing a big smile during my visit with him not too long ago. He said, "you know something? Be happy and kind and content with wherever you are right now. Don’t let your current situation determine who you are and your attitude. Everyday, act like that person you want to become. Sometimes, you don't understand why things are happening the way they are but years down the line it will all make sense."
I believe thatwas the Holy Spirit speaking through this child to me.
God is not done with us yet. We must learn to enjoy our current season, no matter how difficult it seems. God is a good God, so as long as we continue to walk with Him, we will be good.
If we believe in Him, then we must know that, the now is all part of His plan. Do not forget to remind God about all the promises He has made, not that He needs reminding, but for you to know that God is working on you, and if He has said it, He is faithful and He will do it (Hebrews 10:23).
Love,
Alice
