As I turned onto one of the major roadways, I realized how different it was instantly. The snow had been cleared to the sides, and that was the only give away that it had snowed the day before. The asphalt and road markings were as clear as day, and I didn’t have to be afraid of the car skidding off the road.
Just moments earlier, I was driving at about 5 miles per hour because the back road still had all the snow from the previous day on it. Cars had driven over it and compacted it, and the drop in temperatures overnight had frozen over the ice and caused the road to become slick. Anyone who attempted to be reckless on that road could have easily skidded.
It was evident that the salt that had been sprinkled on the major roads and high ways made all the difference! The snow had melted, and once cleared the road was back to normal. The effect of the salt manifested almost immediately. As I continued driving, I was reminded about the scripture about salt and light in Matthew chapter 5.
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty? It’s no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.“
Matthew 5:13 CSB
We underestimate the value that God has placed in us and the difference that we are supposed to make in this world as children of God. Salt introduces flavor, it adds taste, and anyone with taste buds that work can easily tell when a meal lacks salt.
Why have we allowed ourselves to merely exist rather than impact the world God has put us in? Why isn’t our saltiness tasted in our relationships, our careers, our environment, our church, and our lives? Why are we being ordinary when we have been called to be different, exceptional and to be a reflection of our God!?
Jesus asked, "what good is salt if it loses its taste?" Sadly many of us have lost our saltiness. We have lost the distinctiveness and purpose for which we were made. Nothing about us shows that we are believers and followers of Christ. We have become like everyone else! But it’s not late. We can pick up from where we left off so that the value that God put in us will be made manifest in our lives and have effect on our environment.
We are the salt of the earth and we were created to make a difference; let's be that which we were made for!
Love,
Alice
